    As part of our continued support for referees, NI Fencing has 5 spaces available to our members to attend the Fencers Club London Sabre Referee Convention on 8th December.

    This is an online event.

    NIJFS Round 4 – Change of Date

    Note that Round 4 of the NI junior foil series has moved from the Saturday to the Sunday.

    It will now be held on Sunday 11th January 2026.

    This is due to venue availability.

    Round 3 will still be held on Saturday 13th December 2025.

    On 8th November we had the second round of the Northern Ireland Junior Foil Series at Shankill Leisure Centre – the premier competition for junior foil fencers.

  • Referee Development Opportunities

    As part of our ongoing support for Referee Development we have partnered with British Fencing to deliver Level 2 Sabre and Foil Referee courses.

    The courses will be in 2 parts – an initial online session followed by a Practical Assessment .

    The Foil online session will take place on Thursday 27th November at 19.00 followed by a Practical Assessment at the Northern Ireland Open on 24 / 25th January 2026

    The Sabre online session will take place on Monday 1st December at 19.00 followed by a Practical Assessment at the Northern Ireland Open on 24 / 25th January 2026.

    To be eligible to participate in the sessions you must be a British Fencing Member .

    Referee Education Sessions

    As part of NI Fencing’s commitment to supporting referee development we are offering support to cover the sign on fee to attend the forthcoming Fencers Club London online Referee Education sessions.

    There are 2 sessions available :

    23rd October 2025 18.30-20.30 Foil refereeing session

    20th November 2025 18.30-20.30 Epee refereeing session

    NI Fencing is offering to cover the registration costs for 5 people for each session. These will be available on a first come first served basis.

    If you wish to claim one of the places please e mail to [email protected] to express your interest and confirm which session you wish to attend .

    If you are unable to attend the live session date via your registration will be sent a recording of the session .

    If you are successful in your application the next steps in the process will be sent to you in a confirmation e mail.

    All applicants must be current members of NI Fencing.

    Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2026

    Seniors, Veterans & U23

     Call for Interest and Selection Criteria

    The 2026 Commonwealth Senior, Veterans & U23 Fencing Championships will take place at Charterhouse School, Lagos, Nigeria from Sunday 09 August to Wednesday 19 August 2026. (Weapons control opens Saturday 08 August 2026.)

    Individual events planned for Senior, Veteran, U23 and Wheelchair categories in all 3 weapons.

    Team events planned for Senior, Veteran and Wheelchair categories.

    Fencers wishing to represent Northern Ireland must register their interest and provide information about their training programme and competitions entered. Expressions of interest must be submitted to Mike Westgate by email ([email protected]) no later than 10pm Friday 31 October 2025. Team selections will be made on Monday 01 December 2025.

    Mandatory requirements for participation

    1.       British Fencing licence valid for the 2025-2026 season and the duration of the competition.Fencers without a valid licence will not be considered for selection.

    2.       FIE Licence valid for your country for the duration of the competition. Please note that an FIE licence is different to a British Fencing licence but can be purchased on the BF Sport80 platform.

    3.       Valid UK and/or Irish passport.

    Selection standards

    Fencers wishing to represent Northern Ireland should be actively training and competing. Fencers should provide information about their training and competitions to Mike Westgate for consideration by the selection committee. This information should be accurate, up-to-date, and verifiable.

    We request the following information:

    A.      Coach name & contact information. If you do not have a coach, please provide the name of an alternative relevant contact (e.g. fencing club chairperson).

    B.       Training plan. This information should include (but is not necessarily limited to) how often a fencer engages in fencing training and other activities which support their fencing (e.g. additional sports, strength and conditioning routine, etc.).

    C.       2024-2025 Competition Results. Fencers should provide their results, the number of competitors and age category (cadet, junior, senior, veteran, etc.) for all events in which they took part during the 2024-2025 season. Where possible, please provide a website URL for verification of all results.

    D.      2025-2026 Competition Results. Fencers should also provide the same information on an ongoing basis for all events they attend during the 2025-2026 season.

    E.       Training camps/representative teams. Fencers should indicate whether they attended any training events which are not part of their typical training plan (e.g. international training camps) and whether they were a member of any relevant representative teams (e.g. university team, 5-Nations, Satellite, World Cup, Grand Prix, etc.) during the 2024-2025 season.

    F.       Rankings. Fencers should provide a list of all national and/or regional rankings, if any, as at the date of their Expression of Interest.

    G.      List of planned competitions and other training events for 2025-2026.

    H.      Any additional information. If there is any additional information that you think the selectors should know about, please let us know (e.g. a former/current injury that interferes with your ability to train or compete).

    Competition details

    The tournament organisers are currently preparing accommodation packages. We understand that fencers and coaches will be able to book accommodation at Charterhouse School but do not have any details to share just yet. The organisers are also negotiating discounted accommodation at local tourist hotels. More information is due to be published shortly and will hopefully address entry procedures and deadlines, visa guidance, accommodation packages and transportation plans.
